Some Applications of Trigonometry

NCERT Class 10 Mathematics | Chapter 9 | CBSE Board (2020–2025)

Chapter Overview

This chapter applies trigonometric ratios to solve real-world problems involving heights and distances. Key concepts include angle of elevation, angle of depression, and the use of right-angled triangles to find unknown heights or distances without direct measurement.

Exam Relevance: Consistently 4–6 marks (1 MCQ + 1 short + 1 long answer). Frequently tested in both Main and Compartment Exams (2020–2025).

Learning Path

Concept Deep-Dive

1. Key Definitions (NCERT-Aligned)

Line of Sight: The straight line from the observer’s eye to the object.
Horizontal Level: The line parallel to the ground passing through the observer’s eye.
Angle of Elevation: The angle between the horizontal level and the line of sight when the object is above the horizontal.
Angle of Depression: The angle between the horizontal level and the line of sight when the object is below the horizontal.
💡 CBSE Tip: In 2023 Main & 2024 Compartment, definitions were asked as 1-mark very short answers.

2. Problem-Solving Strategy

  1. Draw a neat, labeled diagram
  2. Mark known angles and distances
  3. Identify the right-angled triangle
  4. Apply appropriate trigonometric ratio (usually tan θ = opposite / adjacent)
  5. Solve for unknown; include units (usually meters)
⚠️ Common Mistake: Confusing angle of elevation with angle of depression. Remember: both are measured from the horizontal, not the vertical!

3. Important Notes

Equation Bank (Chapter 9 Only)

tan θ = Height of Object ⁄ Distance from Object
Used when angle of elevation θ and distance are known to find height.
tan θ = Height Difference ⁄ Horizontal Distance
Used in two-point observation problems (e.g., building observed from two points).
Angle of Depression = Angle of Elevation
When an observer is at a height and the object is on the ground, the angle of depression equals the angle of elevation (by alternate interior angles).
Standard Values:
tan 30° = 1⁄√3   |   tan 45° = 1   |   tan 60° = √3
Memorize these — used in 90% of height-distance problems.
